I retired in 1983 as deputy county treasurer with Cheshire County Council completing over 38 years service in local government, and later worked for a further six years in the Arthur Andersen partnership and seconded to work on the UN Development Programme setting up new accounting procedures in the United Arab Emirates. Until 1995 I was a non-executive director of the Chester Health Authority. Widowed from Joyce in 2007 after 52 years marriage, I have two children, a daughter, Janice (b.1960), and a younger son, Niall (b. 1968). He and his partner, Karen, have a daughter Eleanor Beatrice (aka Ellie Bea) born in 2007.
